A Sampler

My name is Jesse Matthews, and I am a new teacher. My introduction to teaching comes from various short and long term contracts, facilitating creativity arts and music workshops for teenages and young adults. General disadvantages as well as physical and/or learning disabilities were common with most of the students I worked with during this time. I used whatever technology was appropriate and available, to engage with the students to hopefully have them express themselves. I could see the cognitive wheels turning as the students would amaze themselves at how easy it was to be creative in the right environment, with the right tool at their fingertips. 

In these workshops and sessions I mainly focused on sound and music, and over the years I employed the same piece of technology in every scenario. Mostly for its ease of use, but also to try to get the most out of one tool, rather than finding the newest or trendiest ones. That single piece of educational technology is a very basic piece of electronic music equipment, commonly known as a sampler. After noticing that a lot of the students wanted to make music, but were very intimidated to learn the piano, guitar and even drums. It takes time, and with no guarantee you will be a master any time soon. However, the sampler offers a different way into the creative process of making music. Simply put, one can use the microphone to record a sound onto one of more of 16 available pads, that they can then push with their finger to ‘play’ or arrange into a sequence to make a song. Therefore you’re not limited to your musical knowledge or proficiency, but instead can use your creativity to carve out your own voice using the sounds that mean something to you. Some actual audio examples from previous students include; their dog’s bark, a rumbling stomach, rain on a bus shelter, smashing light bulbs, a whirlygig, and combing the hair of a childhood doll, just to name a few. These sounds were then used by the student as a part of a story or a song they put together, and it was the tool that aided this learning process.

Though the sampler is a very basic tool that anyone could use with some instant success, it is more importantly one that leaves the user wanting more. The tactile quality of the sampler allows the user to play it like a traditional instrument, but one that is personalized in a very immediate way. Which generally stimulates the player to learn quicker and consequently become confident and comfortable enough to then teach someone else the basics. Which is always great to see, and hear. 

I’m very excited by the creative potential and learning experiences I witnessed students having by using a simple tool like the sampler, and the possibilities that immersive educational technology could inspire. In a fantasy future classroom, AI/VR/AR could be commonplace educational technology to teach and learn with, especially with students who may need a different kind of experience to fully understand the material being taught. As an arts educator I’m always looking for the best way to allow students to bring their ideas to life and I believe creativity to be an important key to pattern recognition, problem solving, total comprehension and self-sufficient learning. 

Research question:

I’m very keen on what AI/VR/AR could do for people suffering from developmental challenges, and other disadvantages that could make traditional learning environments difficult.  Does immersive educational technology actually activate cognitive thinking more than traditional methods? Could these types of educational technology allow students to learn more efficiently or to express their ideas more clearly?

    I’ve worked in many specialized settings in my career, but the one thing that the students always seem to find success with is music. I’ve been able to support students during music therapy, private concerts (have you heard of Hoja?), music classes and even the social dance unit in high school gym classes. I am always impressed at how students connect and create with music. A sampler is a tool that makes creating music more accessible, as you noted, and I hope to see one used in classes that I work with in the future!

    I am super interested in following your work in AR/VR/AI and reaching students with learning differences. I’m also looking at AR/VR, but through a lens of equity of access and student engagement. I hope we can collaborate and share any great research we find 🙂

    Assistive technology is a field that seems to grow every year. I have supported students using Kurzweil and Dragon Naturally Speaking, but these did not lend themselves well to a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) classroom. These students would often be the only ones using a computer to access the lesson materials. With the increase in classroom computers and tech, there are more opportunities to bring technology to everyone that supports learning. I wonder how AR/VR/AI help contribute to an inclusive classroom and/or UDL.

    Hi Jesse,

    I think a key element that is shared by music and technology is the opportunity to try things out with no pressure, particularly to be left alone to make what you will of them. My son (and most of his friends) are very into video games. They’ve also each had music lessons of one sort or another since grade one.

    Last year we put an electric keyboard and a melodica into the gaming room downstairs and now you can hear them adding soundtracks to the game play. I think it’s added a dimension to what they’re up to and given some ‘play space’ to check things out. They’re just now discovering some of the sampling and other functions on the keyboard (a reasonably OK Yamaha) and my son is doing way more practising than he ever did on the piano upstairs.

      Totally agree. Low pressure and investment levels on the player often yield the best results, with both the seasoned players and the newcomers. Creativity seems to flow when anxiety is low. I’m excited for your son and friends to keep up what they’re doing, sampling is so much fun. Obviously there is a extension to a virtual environment that has sampled pieces of other synthetic spaces, either for education or recreation. The extra dimension and play space that can create adds so much to the experience. Though I love everything about pianos, when it comes to creation time, why use just use one sound when you could use any sound.

    I am happy we have a music educator in our midst! I am a primary educator and although we have a music specialist at my school I personally see the incredible value of music education. I am interested in learning more about how you are exploring the realm of music education during this season of remote learning. I have seen some pretty neat ideas out there! My positive perception of music and technology has most significantly been shaped by my personal experience singing in the chamber and jazz choirs at my high school. Our conductor gave us the opportunity to do professional grade recordings in a recording studio. This was an incredible experience. Recently I found a copy of the CD we created, transferred it to digital format, and shared it with my former choir members online. Everyone was thrilled to hear our work more than a decade after we had performed. Although I did not pursue any further studies in music beyond high school I found that my experience with music while growing up was very important for me for developing a sense of belonging and place in my local school community as well as providing a positive outlet and stress relief from the academic pressures of high school, especially in grade eleven and twelve.
